Hair not growing?

Hi all,
Just shooting off a quick post. I don't think my hair is growing anymore. How can I say that, some may ask? Especially since I came from this:
to this:
Well, I say. Quite easily. I really just don't see length. At least not that much. The difference between the two pictures is about a year. I only see length when it's wet, otherwise nothing. I'm not one of those people who obsess about length endlessly but I'm beginning to worry. I know people say the growth spurt is in year two.. I'm half way into year two. Where is my length??? :( :( Any advice/explanations would be greatly appreciated

Sixteen Months

Hello all!! Long time no see! I've been bad, AGAIN, so sorry. Life has been kind of hectic. I notice I have some new followers as well, welcome!

Monday, September 19, 2011

Hi. What do you change about your regimen in the winter? I'd never had to deal with my locs during winter before and I'm a bit scared!

Oooh. This is a tough one. I'm still trying to figure this out. I still need to wash weekly but I see myself switching up my oil mix to contain more castor and jojoba oil which has made a difference already to my scalp, deep conditioning more and keeping them covered. As we go through winter I will be sure to keep you informed! HTH :)

44 Weeks & Anita Grant Peppermint Babassu Shampoo Bar and Raspberry Rhassoul Deep Condish Cubes Review

Phew! What a long title! Hello everyone! Been a while. Technically I shouldn't be on here.. it's exam period and I am so stressed out it is not even funny. Yet I had to update you on my hair; I've been terrible lately. So. What's up with the locs? Well, they entered their 11th month last Thursday (I'm really awful at this.. bottom line, they turn a year on July 1st) .. I can't believe it. It's been nearly a year since I combed my hair. Wow. I will not lie.. sometimes I miss loose hair but I just tell myself that locs are not forever.. I can cut them off and my hair will grow back, not a big deal. Still.. *sigh* Here's my hair today. Nothing spectacular.. rather crappy shots tbh but my room is a mess so I didn't really have much choice when it came to where to snap them from..

Shayaa Natural Hair Salon Review (Formerly known as Naturals @ Evindi Salon)

Hi y'all! Remember I told you about the new salon I found near me? Well I went and got my hair done on Tuesday and I must say.. I LOVED it! It took me about 30 minutes to walk there (I know I said I wouldn't yet times are hard lol) but thanks to trusty Google Maps, I found it OK. First impression: They had been shut down LOL. For real. The place looked run down, windows were dirty.. I thought I'd gotten it wrong and they'd moved to their new residence already. As I got closer, I saw a light on and went inside. There was a young girl who greeted me and I waited for the loctician who had just popped next door. Miss J came in, all smiles and introduced herself before handing me a consultation form thingy where you fill out information about you hair type and history (I thought that was pretty good). After filling it in, she then proceeded to check my hair and confer with the info I'd put on the form (I like that at well.. when I started at Morris Roots the lady just started on my head, no questions asked about the size I wanted or anything). I told Miss J about my dryness issues and thin locs; for the dryness she suggested a hot oil treatment. They do them there but she wasn't pushing it on me, she suggested it and said I could even try it at home so I didn't feel obligated.

Washing without retwisting

 Hi everyone,
This is just a quick post in response to beautiful me's comment/question on my previous post. Now, as I type, I have not retwisted my hair since the end of February. I did the front loosely last wash and that was it. So right now i'm heading for the not twisting for nearly two months route again. This does not affect my washing, I still wash roughly every week-10 days. Worried about unravelling in the early stages? Ok for the early stages i.e. the first 3 months or so I washed every two to three weeks but wasn't retwisting each time. To minimise unravelling I wore a stocking cap that looks like this:
and shampooed through it.

New salon??

Yes, I may have found a new salon in Nottingham! Whooop!! I just googled it because to be honest, even though I miss my loctician, I cannot keep paying £50 to get my hair hooked up. That is not including the train/coach ticket to get down there and back up in the first place. In comes Naturals @ Evindi. They seem decent, though I cannot find their prices on the website so I will be calling on Tuesday to find out. Their Facebook page claims they offer 20% off on Tuesdays-Thursdays for students, which would be EXCELLENT for me. I only hope that they are not expensive BECAUSE they know they are tapping into a niche market. Plus, the salon is not even that far away from where I am here.. I could walk if I wanted (not very likely though, it's a 30 minute journey on foot) but 15 minutes away on the bus! YEEEEEEESSSSS!! I am quite excited. Fingers crossed! If all goes well, I will be doing my hair here at the end of April, and maybe even everytime I come up to Nottingham should I decide to go with the dentist here. *dancing*

New Shampoo!

Yes, I did it. I bit the bullet and bought the Honeysuckle Rose (HSR) Moisturising Shampoo. I also got their Rose Mosqueta Nourishing Shampoo. I will not tell a lie, it really touched me to buy the products but Aubrey Organics UK is selling them 15% off.. I am yet to see them for this price and you guys know I've been looking since October last year. I figured I might as well get them now because I don't know how long the offer will last for (if you are interested, be quick! They are also selling their GPB stuff with the offer of buy the conditioner and get the shampoo free). Ordered two days ago, they came this morning. Speedy delivery, that's what I like. Now, when to actually try them out? Not sure. Still have some TRESemme Moisturising shampoo left over and I don't know if I want to finish that first. Then again, I suppose it would be best for me to try it now and if I don't like it, I still have some of my usual to use. Ok, will wash my hair this weekend, providing I'm not working and will post the review soon after!
*Excuse the face. Darkened room/lack of sleep/crappy webcam, all working against me :-(*

~And shame on you all. None of you thought to remind me that it was my one year natural anniversary?? SMH. Terrible. LOL. I'll compose a slide show soon of my hair through this year. Ok, back to coursework. Cannot wait to hand this stuff in, then again, I need an extension to finish this thing!!!
Toodles !xoxo

ETA: I just remembered, I have no camera! Thus I won't be able to post pics of my first wash with the HSR. Thus, I'll wait till I get to London next weekend to wash and charge the battery. Soz folks!

Oil in Shampoo

Quick post y'all.. I have coursework to do and this procrastination is getting out of hand :S

In an attempt to add moisture to my locs, I used this "trick" of adding oil to my shampoo, the oil in question was plain olive oil from Sainsbury's lol. It was a bit of a feat getting it into my TRESemme bottle but I managed it in the end. The first thing I noticed is that you need to shake it thoroughly before using it. Otherwise it won't mix well. Do this every time you use it because it will separate. What I also noticed is that it turned my clear shampoo into a creamy one. It scared me quite a bit, I can't lie. I was just thinking, OMD I've ruined my shampoo!! I didn't though, it turned out alright in the end; I just remembered to rinse thoroughly afterwards in case of build up. I did notice a difference in how my locs felt the first time.. yessir. They did feel softer. Noticeable, but not revolutionary. Effects lasted for a couple of days, then it reverted back to type. Ok I say a couple of days.. more like five or six. The second time around I didn't get the same result, no idea why. Maybe I didn't use enough shampoo? I was in a bit of a hurry, was late for class that day. Will try again this week hopefully and see.

So, yes. Those that are suffering from dry locs and use SLS shampoos, maybe this could help?

I will be posting pictures up soon, as soon as this blasted coursework is submitted, I promise, even though there is not much happening with them.. just looking messy as usual lol. These days I keep them covered mostly

Are you rinsing enough?

Hi everyone!

So. Not much happening with the locs again.. just rolling with it. I retwisted a couple of weekends ago but guess which intelligent person left her camera charger in London? Yeah. I only got a couple of pictures at my cousin's birthday party and even with that, my hair isn't really on show. A shame, I styled it really nicely and everything. One girl actually came up to me to say she was natural as well, loved my hair and wanted to know about it. How beautiful. I was feeling myself. Haha..

My main topic of today's post.. rinsing. At the risk of repeating myself, are you rinsing enough? One time I was in the shower and rinsed for an extended period of time by chance. That day, my locs dried really quickly. My edges dried within the hour. I'd been having issues with my hair taking a while to dry lately and I've been afraid of my locs moulding. Rinsed extensively again the next wash and voila! Dry hair really quickly. I'm guessing I had residue in my locs after washing that was causing it to take long to dry. It worked so effectively that when retwisting, most of my hair had dried when I was less than a quarter way in. Amazing. Majority of my hair now dries within about four hours indoors, with the only slightly damp locs in the middle of my head. Now I rinse for about 5 minutes after washing, scrub myself (as I wash when I shower), rinse my body while allowing the water to run through my hair and when I'm done with the suds, let it keep running for an extra 5 minutes which totals to about 10 mins, slightly more.

Erm.. yeah. A "revelation" lol. Just thought I'd share. I hope it helps

33 Weeks.. How many months is that?

Hey y'all. Been a minute. I lost track, I kid you not. I barely notice them these days.
So what's up with the locs? Hmm..They're doing alright. I have one loc that REFUSES to loc, not sure if I've mentioned it before. It is beyond frustrating.
Two strand twisted it again today before I washed, if it comes down again I'll braid it. I was thinking about joining it to the one behind but I don't really want to because it's the same size as the one on the other side which is doing just fine. I also have this anorexic loc right in front.. It is driving me INSANE. I'm so worried about it. There isn't really one around it that I can comfortably combine it to, unless it's one behind it but that is not ideal. Was considering taking it down completely and starting it over again.. maybe it was the stretching of the professional retwist that made it so skinny.
For real.. It's enough to make me cry. Aaaand.. I snipped off a loc. Yeah.. It was thinning seriously, no idea why. Maybe because of the extent of meshing back there and the need for ripping but I could feel where the discrepancy was. The root was thinner than the actual loc if that makes sense so I cut it off where the root met the locked hair and combined the resulting loose hair to the loc next to it. Here's the loc
I picked it out to see what was going on in there.. Good news- No buildup. Bad news- Lint. Grrrr.. Will I ever be free of the dreaded lint? Come on now! I read on Nappturality that bentonite clay can help draw it out.. I'm going to try that when I feel my locs are mature enough to handle it. My locs feel scratchy.. what is that about? Man.. I really wish they'd get their act together. Going for my cousin's party next weekend so I'll retwist and hopefully manage to style them some way. Will put pics up then. Until then, I leave you with a random hair shot

6 months 2 weeks

Time really does fly. I have to actually remember to check how old the locs are, isn't that amazing? I'm still with it, and I must say, they don't look too bad. I'm still not sleeping with a scarf so major lint issues. I really need to start covering my hair or shutting up about how bad they look as a consequence. I'll be in London this weekend for my birthday (my birthday is on Monday but going down to spend the weekend with the fam) and will be getting my hair hooked up at Morris Roots whilst I'm there. I'm sure my loctician will chastise me because I haven't been there since September.. oops. Oh well.. Never mind. Today I washed my hair and did a deep conditioning with a coconut milk, olive oil and honey mix..hair feels great. I think using olive oil was a better choice, even though I may have been a little heavy handed, because my hair feels really moisturised. Followed up with my Mist Bodifier and coconut oil, of course :-) I have actually stopped using my TresEmme and started using the black soap I use to shower, LOL. Only because I've heard people raving about it and since I use it every day on my body, I decided to try it out on my locs. My hair did feel a bit dry the first time but the locs felt good. Maybe it will become permanent, who knows? Time will tell. There is less crawling these days at the roots, for which I'm sure you will know I am eternally grateful for. The locs actually feel and look loc like if that makes sense.. J'adore. Ok pic time.. I'll update next week with pics of my birthday hair :-P (Click on all to enlarge)

Combined Locs

If you remember, I combined some locs behind my right ear earlier? Well, I combined a couple more. I want to combine others but I'm a little scared, though I don't really know why. Ok, I am not scared, I just do not know what to combine them to. Do you remember the loc I took down and split in the front? I recombined it yesterday LOL. I don't even know why I bothered to separate it. These are the combined locs (click on all pics to enlarge):
before
After
 Others:

I think they are meshing rather well, don't you think? Especially the first two of others, you can barely tell. But, when I took down the end of one loc to combine for the last one above, there was lint!! I was actually quite upset, like wth??
(dunno if you can see it) For that tiny bit I combed out, it was quite alot. I need to get more strict with covering my hair. I want to combine the ones on my hairline but I am uncertain. The parts seem okay so they should end up the size as my other locs but are considerably smaller at this point in time. Maybe because they are not locked to the same extent? I decided to wait a bit to see how it goes. Otherwise.. I'm good. Decided to add a couple of random hair shots, just to show what's up with the locs..
in the process of taking down the front flat twists..

A Lil Over 6 months

Well... I'm still with it. Laziness took over at some point, as well as the fact that I am in Ghana and my hair feels completely different, i.e. wonderful. Love it. Got to Ghana a week ago, after not having twisted since October 10th I think it was. I liked the look.. didn't really care. Family, not so much. We were still in the airport carpark and my mum asks "So when are you going to do your hair? It's looking matted." iLaughed. Yeah.. Next morning, Dad looks at my hair, shakes his head and says that I need to do my hair... It looks ok for when I'm in England as I'm a student but now I'm back home, it needs to be done. I just kept it moving till a few days ago when I got it twisted at this natural hair salon in Accra called Twists and Locs Salon. The price was a bit steep for Ghana, a whole twenty Ghana Cedis, PLUS an extra five because I used their Taliah Waajid Lock It Up Gel. The extra five irritated me because I JUST bought a pot before I left and my sister took it out of the suitcase without me knowing so it is still in London. Joy. I liked the result though.. got the front flat twisted and left the back though I hold up the front half. This is what I look like atm:
A couple of days old at this point..

Freshly done..
And here's a texture shot, two months and a bit untwisted:

Yeah. Oh I bought the Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier. Did I mention I love it? Ok, well, I love it LOL. Amazing. My hair feels brilliant and I adore the way the teatree makes my scalp tingle. It's creamy so I was a bit worried at first but if you rub it in it disappears almost immediately so it's all good hopefully. My brother broke my new bottle of coconut oil, like two days after I got here so the bodifier is all I have been using. I should use some of my sister's olive oil at some point. And I've realised my hair is getting longer! Yup. Now it tickles my neck and gets wet when I shower. Not that I mind but yeah... I'm in love with my locs again. All my friends LOVE them which makes me feel even better about my hair. Watch this space... Toodles!! xoxo
